While we enjoy getting wet in the rain, we forget that the monsoon shower actually harms our skin to a great extent; leading to various skin problems. But, the humidity and dampness which is pervasive in the rainy season give place to bacteria to develop, thereby causing fungal and bacterial infections. And that is why; our skin needs extra attention and care during the rainy season.

With the rising humidity during the monsoon season, skin infections become quite common. Dermatologists say that one should stay clean and use anti-fungal cosmetics to prevent skin diseases.

1.Nail Infections

Nails are at high risk of fungal infections during monsoon. They can become weak, discoloured, brittle and rough. If the infection gets severe, the nail can also get detached from the nail bed. Other symptoms of nail infections are red and itchy skin around the nails.

Tip: Trim your nails as long nails are more attracted to bacteria which can lead to fungal infection in the feet. You can also apply antifungal cream or powder to your hands and feet to keep skin diseases at bay.

2.Athlete’s Foot

Athlete ’s foot, which is medically termed as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet. The infection is contagious, which is why it starts from the toes but can spread to the toenails and hands as well. The symptoms of athlete’s foot are red, moist and itchy rashes on the feet; cracked skin, blisters, burning sensation and smelly feet.  This infection is generally a result of wearing ill-fitting and wet shoes. This disease is called athlete’s foot because it commonly affects athletes. The infection is not severe, but sometimes it may be hard to treat it. If you observe the symptoms of athlete’s foot and you have diabetes or have a weak immune system; then you must consult a Doctor immediately.

Tip: During the rainy season, you should wear open-toed shoes, slippers and flip-flops to allow your feet to breathe properly. Avoid wearing plastic shoes, leather shoes and canvas as they can cause infection. Also, change your socks daily and wash your feet once you come back home with cool water to get rid of the dirt and impurities. Keep your feet clean and dry.

3.Eczema

Eczema is a severe skin condition characterized by red patches on the skin. In this condition, the patches of skin become itchy, inflamed, cracked and rough. It may also lead to blisters on the skin. Environmental factors like smoke and pollen can trigger eczema. It is not a contagious disease and can be prevented with anti-bacterial soaps.

Tip: Use anti-bacterial soaps, face washed and talcum powders to keep your skin dry. Wear clean clothes and bathe twice a day to keep eczema at bay.

4.Ringworm

Ringworm is one of the most common fungal infections of the skin. It is a misconception that ringworm is caused due to a worm. It can affect both humans and animals. The infection affects the skin of the scalp, feet, groin, beard or other areas. It is contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another. This infection causes a scaly rash that appears as round, red patches on the skin. Several other symptoms of ringworm are scaling on the scalp, itching and blisters. It usually occurs in the sole of the feet, armpits and behind the ears.

Tip: To prevent this skin disease, you must apply anti-fungal powder to your skin. Also, wear full-sleeved clothes and long pants to protect your body parts from stings or insect bites. Never wear wet clothes as they cause fungal infection immediately.

5.Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition which causes the skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form red patches and scales that can be itchy and quite painful. This disease comes and goes and can be treated by stopping the skin cells from growing so quickly. You can alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis as it has no cure.

Tip: Drink aloe Vera juice daily to prevent this skin disease. Also, rub aloe vera gel onto the skin to get relief from the symptoms of psoriasis.

You can also make a home remedy for treating Psoriasis. Take one tablespoon of gram flour and mix it with one teaspoon each of milk and rose water. Blend all the ingredients well to form a smooth consistency. Apply this paste to the skin and rinse off after 10 minutes.

You should also use anti-bacterial soaps, face wash and talcum powder to prevent psoriasis.
