The thyroid, also known as the butterfly gland is located at the front of the neck below Adam’s apple. The primary function of this endocrine gland is the secretion of thyroid hormones which regulate body processes such as body temperature, digestion, respiration and metabolic processes in the body.
The thyroid gland produces two major hormones, T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine); and thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH) are another major hormones produced by the pituitary gland.
An Overview of Thyroid Function Tests
Thyroid Function Tests are blood tests done to measure how efficiently the thyroid gland is working. The tests include T3, T3RU, T4 and TSH.
The imbalance of T3 and T4 in the human body causes two conditions: Hypothyroidism (under production of hormones) and Hyperthyroidism (overproduction of hormones.)
Types of Thyroid Tests:
1. TSH TESTS
TSH test is done to know the level of production of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which is secreted by the pituitary gland. Low levels of TSH in blood test indicate that there is an overproduction of thyroid hormones, i.e. Hyperthyroidism whereas a high level of TSH indicates under production of thyroid hormones, i.e. Hypothyroidism.
2. T4 TESTS
T4 (Thyroxine test) is done to analyse if Hypothyroidism or Hyperthyroidism is due to the imbalance of the pituitary gland or by the thyroid gland itself.
3. T3 TESTS
A T3 test is done to check the level of triiodothyronine, another important thyroid hormone. This test is done to make a confirmed diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism or to analyse the seriousness of the hyperthyroidism.
